metals and their extraction Flashcards
what are ores?
rocks containing metal compounds
what metals are usually extracted through electrolysis?
more reactive then carbon
what metals are usually extracted by reduction with carbon?
metals less reactive then carbon
what metals are found pure?
metals less reactive then hydrogen
what is the order of the reactivity series?
K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al, C, Zn, Fe, Sn, PB, H, Cu, Ag, Au, Pt
what happens in a displacement reaction?
a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from a compound
what is the thermite reaction?
a displacement reaction used to produce pure iron
2Al (s) + Fe2O3 (s) –> 2Fe (s) + Al2O3 (s)
it is a highly exothermic reaction
what are oxidation and reduction in terms of oxygen and electrons?
OILRIG is for electrons [O = -, R = +]
opposite for oxygen [O = +, R = -]
what materials go into the blast furnace?
- iron ore
- limestone, CaCO3 - undergoes thermal decomposition to form calcium oxide, CaO, which reacts with impurities
- coke - reacts with oxygen to form carbon monoxide which then reduces iron ore
- oxygen - oxygen levels are controlled so carbon monoxide ofrms and now dioxide, as oxygen reacts with the carbon in coke
what is the first reaction in the blast furnace?
coke reacts with oxygen in the air to form carbon dioxide, it’s an exothermic reaction and heats up the furnace
C (s) + O2 (g) –> CO2 (g)
