What is Displacement Reaction ?
is a reaction in which a more reactive element takes the place of a less reactive element in a compound
Reaction of Metal with Oxygen
Metal + Oxygen –> Metal Oxide
What flame color does potassium burn when heated?
lilac
What flame color does sodium burn when heated?
yelllow orange
What flame color does calcium burn when heated?
brick red
What flame color does magnesium burn when heated?
bright white
Color of solid produced

Sodium(white)
Calcium(white)
Magnesium(white)
Aluminum((white)
Zinc(white)
Iron(black)
Copper(black)
Reaction of metals with water
potassium(vigorously)
Sodium(vigorously)
Calcium(vigorously)
Magnesium(very slowly)
Aluminum(don’t react)
Zinc(don’t react)
Iron(don’t react)
Copper(don’t react)
Observation of Potassium reacting with water
floats, fizzes, moves about the surface, heat released, eventually disappears,
colorless solution formed, LILAC flame, crackle or explosion at the end.
Observation of Sodium reacting with water
Sodium – floats, fizzes, moves about the surface, melts to form a silvery ball, eventually
disappears, colorless solution formed.
Observation of Calcium reacting with water
Calcium – fizzes, sinks then rises, white solid in the solution, heat released.
Reaction of Magnesium with Steam
- Magnesium burns with a bright white light and a white solid is formed.
Reaction of Zinc with steam
Zinc glows and a yellow solid is formed which changes to white on cooling.
