description of metals

A

metals
high mp and bp
sonorous-metal sounds
malleable-flexible/able to bend in shapes
good conductors of heat and electricty/-easily allows energy to transfer thr it poor insulators tho
shiny when new/fresh

Q

how do you know hydrogen is produced duirng a metal and acid reaction?

A

pour 10 ml of hydrochloric acid in tube
add your metal then cover
once you see the formattion of bubbels put a splint of fire in a pop splint should occur
shows hydrogen is created as its flammable-catches fire easily
bubbles produced are hydrogen gas made as acids have properties of H+ ions

16
Q

what is the only metal that conducts electricty?

A

carbon

17
Q

when iron, oxygen and water react what it the product?

A

iron hyrdoxide which when present results into rusting-corrosion

18
Q

define catalyst-

A

a catalyst is a substance that changes the speed of a reaction without being permanently changed itself

19
Q

examples of a catalyst:

A

hair curler,straightner,cars

20
Q

what metal doesnt react with water or oxygen is

A

platinum

21
Q

metals more ereactive than potassium

A

caesium and rubidium

22
Q

what metal reacts with oxygen but not water

A

copper

23
Q

which metals reacts slowly with water

A

tin,iron and zinc

24
Q

why doesnt alluminium rust?

A

when its first fresh it reacts w oxygn and has an oxide layer on it prevent it

25
Q

difference between metals rusting and corroding?

A

Corrosion is the process by which certain materials, metals and non-metals, deteriorate as a result of oxidation.
Rusting is oxidation of iron in the presence of air and moisture.

26
Q

which metal is the only one that can rust?

A

iron

27
Q

displacemnet reaction-

A

when during the reaction the more reactive metal gradually disappears as it forms a solution and the less reactive metal coats the surface of the more reacting metal

28
Q

example of displacemnet reaction

A

zinc + iron oxide = zinc oxide + iron
this is because zinc is more reactive than iron
