Metals, Acids, Bases and Salts Flashcards
What do strong acids do?
Fully ionise
What do weak acids do?
Partially ionise
What is an acid?
Substances that give H+ ions in water
What does a base do?
Neutralise acids
Metal oxide, metal hydroxide and metal carbonate are examples of what?
Bases
Salt required practical
Making Salt Crystals:
- Measure 25cm^3 of acid
- Gently warm acid
- Add base in excess
- Filter excess base away
- Evaporate water slowly from solution to get crystals
What is more reactive the top or bottom of the reactivity series?
Top
What is less reactive the top or bottom of the reactivity series?
Bottom
What practical do you use to decide the reactivity of metals?
Displacement reaction
Metal + acid —> Salt + hydrogen
Test for hydrogen
Bring burning splint near gas. If hydrogen is present you will hear a squeaky pop
Test for carbon dioxide
Bubble through lime water. If carbon dioxide is present lime water turns cloudy
Nitric acids are called
Nitrates
Hydrochloric acids are called
Chlorides
Sulphuric acids are called
Sulphates
