Metals Flashcards
Ferrous metals
Any metal that contains iron
Rusts over time when exposed to moisture or oxidation
Iron has little practical uses and normally combined with carbon elements to create useful metal
Cast Iron - Ferrous
Cost: relatively inexpensive
Properties - Brittle and casts well
Uses - Engine parts,Machine tools, Vices, Manhole covers
Mild Steel - Ferrous
Properties - Malleable, Ductile, Relatively easy to work, easy to weld
Uses - Car body panels, nuts, bolts, screws, tubes, springs and small non cutting tools
Stainless steel - Ferrous
Properties - Hard and tough, Corrosion and wear resistant
Uses - Furniture Components, cutlery, sink units, dishes, teapot’s, boat fittings and kitchen appliance
High-Carbon Steel - Ferrous
Properties - Malleable, Ductile, can be hardened and tempered
Uses - Cutting tools, files, drills, saws, taps and dies, knives, scribers, lathe tools
Non Ferrous Metals
Contains no iron
Referred to as pure metal
Aluminium - Non Ferrous
Properties - Pure metal, very good strength to weight ratio and casts easily
Uses - Drink Cans, Window frames, Food Packaging, Kitchen Utensils
Copper - Non Ferrous
Properties - Tough, Ductile and Malleable. Good conductor of electricity
Cost - Expensive
Uses - Coins, Plumbing/water pipes, electric wires and cables, jewellery
Alloys
Made when two or more metals are combined to form a new material
Other metals are often alloyed together to improve their purposes
Brass
Properties - Non Ferrous, Casts well, Good conductor, Easily joined
Uses - Hinges, Door Handles, Screws, Plumbing Valves, Taps, Decorative Items and Casting
Duralumin
Properties - Non Ferrous, Very good strength to weight ratio, Machines and finishes well and age hardens
Uses - Aircraft parts due to its very high strength to weight ratio
