Metals Flashcards
What is a Ferrous metal?
A metal containing mostly iron and carbon. Ferrous metals are magnetic and will rust.
(Remember that the FE in Ferrous, stands for FE = Iron because they contain Iron).
What is a Non-Ferrous metal?
A metal that does not contain Iron. Non-Ferrous metals are not magnetic and do not rust.
(Remember no FE means no Iron).
What is an Alloy?
A metal made of two or more metals, or combining two or more elements, one of which must be a metal. Alloys can also be sub classified as “Ferrous Alloys” or “Non-Ferrous Alloys.”
Give three examples of a Ferrous metal.
Low Carbon Steel, Medium Carbon Steel and Cast Iron.
Give three examples of a Non-Ferrous metal.
Aluminium, Copper, Zinc, Silver, Gold, Titanium and Tin.
Give three examples of an Alloy.
Ferrous Alloys: Stainless Steel and Die Steel (tool steel).
Non Ferrous Alloys: Bronze, Brass, Duralumin and Pewter.
Why would Aluminium be a good material for a drinks can?
- It’s malleable which allows the can to be deep drawn into shape.
- It’s lightweight which makes it easier to lift and transport; aluminium adds little to the product weight.
- It’s a food safe material which means the user will not be poisoned when drinking from the can.
- It’s a Non-Ferrous material which means it will not rust on contact with the liquid in the can.
- It’s very easy to recycle and use again for other products because it has a low melting point (about 660 degrees C), therefore saving finite resources.
- It’s aesthetically pleasing with a natural silvery colour, which offers a contemporary, clean look to the product.
