Composites Flashcards
1
Q
What is a Composite?
A
A material compromised of two or more different materials, resulting in a material with enhanced properties. Composites can either be;
- Fibre Based (CFRP, GRP, Fibre Concrete),
- Particle Based (Tungsten Carbide, Concrete), OR
- Sheet Based (Aluminium Composite Board, Engineered Wood, e.g. Glulam).
2
Q
Name three examples of Composites.
A
Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic (GFRP), Tungsten Carbide, Aluminium Composite Board, Concrete, Fibre Cement and Engineered Wood e.g. Glulam.
3
Q
Why is GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) suitable for a boat hull?
A
- It can be manufactured via the lay-up method, allowing complex 3D shapes such as the hull to be created.
- It can be pigmented to produce a range of colours for improved aesthetics or corporate branding such as racing team colours.
- It has chemical resistance so will not corrode or decay when in the salty sea water.
- It is a tough material and is able to withstand minor impact from waves, etc, without damage.
