metals Flashcards
chapter 4
copper alloys
bronze- made by mixing copper with tin- used to make ship propellers because of its toughness and resistance to corrosion
brass- copper with zinc-musical instruments
aluminium alloys
used to build aircrafts, since its light weight but strong
army plating
tanks and other military vehicles
gold alloys
usually alloyed with copper to make jewellery
how is iron extracted from its ore?
by reducing it using carbon in a blast furnace, the main agent is carbon monoxide gas.
carbon steels
Low carbon steels:
-easily shaped
-less likely to shatter on impact with a hard object
High carbon steels:
-very strong but brittle
alloy steels
Low alloy steels:
-more expensive that carbon steels
Stainless steels:
-resistant to corrosion
what do carbonates form when reacted with a dilute acid?
forms a salt, water and carbon dioxide
testing for carbon dioxide
limewater turns cloudy, a precipitate of insoluble carbonate causes the cloudiness
what do metal carbonates decompose on?
heating to form the metal oxide and carbon dioxide
oxidation
loss of electrons
reduction
gain electrons
