Metals Flashcards
Where can you find metals?
Left of the zig-zag line
What are some properties of metals?
Solid, malleable, ductile, conductive and High boiling and melting points
Solid at room temp. ( mecury is the execption)
What holds metals together?
Metallic bonding
What carry’s the electrons ?
The sea of electrons
How do the electrons roam freely?
The electrons aren’t needed by the metal so the electrons are dettached from the metal
These electrons are named ‘Delocalised Electrons’
Give examples of unreactive metals
Gold, Platinum,silver
How are unreactive metals extracted from the ground?
They are found as Ores in the ground and then seperated from any mineral surrounding the metal
How are unreactive metals seperated from the rock?
Through heat alone
How are the most reactive metals seperated?
Through the process of electrolysis
Name some very reactive metals
Potassium, lithium, Magnesium, sodium and Aluminium
What process is used for The middle point of metal?
Heat with carbon / carbon monoxide
What comes from a reaction with oxygen?
Metal oxide
Copper + oxygen > Copper Oxide
What comes from a reaction with water?
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
E.G Sodium + water > Sodium hydroxide + Hydrogen
What comes from a reaction with
Acid?
Metal salt + Hydrogen
E.G zinc + nitric acid > Zinc Nitrate + Hydrogen
What is the schnazy word for Battery ?
Electrochemical cell
