Homologous series Flashcards
What is a Homologous series?
A Family of Chemicals which can be Represented by a General Formula and show similar chemical propertys.
The General Formula of the Alkanes.
Cn H2n +2 eg. C1 H4 , C2 H4 and C3 H6
What is a Fuel? , What is the Burning of Fuels? And what is it Called?
A Fuel is a Substance that can be Burned to release Energy. Burning is the Reaction between the Substance and Oxygen, giving out energy. This Reaction is called Combustion.
What is combustion an Example of?
Exothermic Reaction
HydroCarbon is a ….
molecule consisting of hydrogen and carbon atoms only
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen > ?
Carbon Dioxide + water
How can the harmful chemicals from Engines using hydrocarbons be toned down?
catalytic converters using platinum catalysts.
Alkanes are the simplest Homologous series. Can you name them in increasing order?
Methane, ethane, propane , butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, dectane
What defines an AlkANE ?
They must end in - ANE , they contain single c-c bonds , the general formula is Cn Hn2 +2
