Metals Flashcards
What is a metal?
Incomplete combustion (when there is an insufficient supply of oxygen) could lead to toxic carbon monoxide (CO) being produced instead of carbon dioxide
Why can metals conduct electricity?
The ability of metals to conduct electricity stems from their delocalised electrons. As these are free to move, an electrical current can flow through metallic materials.
What can metals react with?
Metals can react with water, acid and oxygen. The reactivity of the metal determines which reactions the metal participates in.
What happens when metals react with water?
Metals can react with water, acid and oxygen. The reactivity of the metal determines which reactions the metal participates in.
Whats an example of metals reacting with water?
calcium+water—- calcium hydroxide+hydrogen
What happens when metals react with acids?
When metals react with acids, a salt of the metal and hydrogen gas are formed
Whats an example of a metal reacting with an acid?
magnesium+ hydrochloric acid —- magnesium chloride+hyrdogen
What happens when metals react with oxygen?
When metals react with oxygen, metal oxides are formed.
Whats an example of metals reacting with an oxygen?
zinc+oxygen—- Zinc(II) oxide
What happens during an electrolysis reaction?
Negative ions loose electrons at the positive electrode (oxidation)
Positive ions gain electrons at the negative electrode (reduction)
