Everyday consumer products Flashcards
What is the hydroxyl group for alcohols?
-OH
What are alcohols also known as?
alkanols
- They are a homologous series
What is alcohols general formula
CnH2n+1OH
Naming alcohols
The rules for naming an alcohol are the same as before. The hydroxyl functional group is the most important part of the molecule and the carbon chain is numbered to give it the lowest branch number.
And they all end in -Ol
An example of naming alcohols
CH3CH2CH(OH)CH3
= Butan-2-ol
What are some uses of alcohols?
- Intoxicating effects (Drinking)
- Fuels
- Solvents
-Hand gels/ disinfectant wipes (propan-2-ol)
What are the mp/bp for alcohol?
- The melting points and boiling points of alcohols increase with size due to stronger intermolicular forces
What is the general formula for Carboxylic acids?
CnH2n+1COOH
What are the naming rules for carboxylic acids?
When naming carboxylic acids, the position of the carboxyl group does not need to be identified with a number, as it is always found at the end of the carbon chain, and so is on the first carbon. And they end in - oic
What are the melting points and boiling points of carboxylic acids?
The melting points and boiling points of carboxylic acids increases with size due to stronger intermolicular forces
What are some uses for carboxylic acids?
- Vinegar ( ethanoic acid) which can also be used for cleaning
What are some common salts which are made with carboxylic acids?
Sodium hydroxide+ ethanoic acid =sodium ethanoate +water
Lithium carbonate +propanoic acid =lithium propanoate +water +carbon dioxide
