Metals Flashcards

1
Q

Ferrous metals

A

Contain iron
Prone to rusting if exposed to moisture
Magnetic properties
Relatively high melting point - iron content
Therefore require specialised equipment to cast products
Readily recyclable

Q

Non ferrous metals

A

Do not contain iron
Resistant to corrosion and rust - no oxide layers form on the surface of these metals
Do not have magnetic properties

Q

Alloys

A

When 2 or more metals are mixed together in order to obtain the properties of the individual metals

Mixtures can change depending on the materials use and how it will be processed

14
Q

Stainless steel

A

Ferrous alloy - 90% steel and also includes chrome and nickel

By mixing chrome and nickel the new metal becomes non magnetic

Does not corrode
Resistant to wear

Non reactive - used extensively in food processing, cooking and utensils

Q

Duralumin

A

Non ferrous- aluminium alloy

Easy machinability
Can be heat treated
Excellent mechanical structure- both light weight and strong

Used extensively in aviation, mainly air frames

Q

Brass

A

Non ferrous - mixture of copper and zinc
Easily cast into shapes - complex shapes can be made
Very aesthetically pleasing - can be polished very highly

Used often in plumbing industry and fishing industry
Valves and taps
Where pipework is exposed to exterior moisture
