METALLURGY Flashcards
What is metallurgy?
Metallurgy is the study of metals and their properties and involves the development of new alloys.
Mostly used for ferrous metals
What are some applications of metallurgy?
Applications of metallurgy are:
* Reduction in the mass of metals
* Increase in the strength of machnes
* Aircraft manufacture
What are some of the most common metals found in nature?
Some of the most common metals in nature are:
* Iron
* Copper
* Aluminium
What are ways in which metals can be shaped?
The ways in which metals can be shaped are:
* Casting
* Forging
* Rolling
* Bending
* Drawing
* Forming
* Cutting
* Joining
What three variables affect the properties of metals?
The three variables which affect the properties of metals are:
* Chemical
* Physical
* Mechanical
What is meant by the brittleness of a metal?
Brittleness describes the property of a material that fractures when subjected to stress but has a little tendency to deform before rupture
What is meant by the ductility of a metal?
Ductility refers to a metal’s ability to be pmanently deformed without breaking
What is meant by the elasticity of a metal?
Elasticity refers to a metals ability to return to its original shape after any force acting on it has been removed.
What is meant by the hardness of a metal?
The hardness of a metal to resist forcible pentration or plastc deformation
What is meant by the malleability of a metal?
What metals make up the composition of steel?
Steel is made up of iron and steel
What metals can be added to the composition of steel to change its propertis?
Some other metals which can be added to the composition of steel are:
* Maganese
* Sulphur
* Phosphorus Silicon
What effects does the percentage of carbon have on the properties of steel?
What are the two types of steel groups?
The two types of steelgroups are:
* Plain carbon steels
* Alloys steels
