Metallic Solids Full Summary Flashcards
1
Q
Types Of Particles:
A
Metal atoms (line between B and Al, drawn like steps downwards and all elements to the right are metals)
2
Q
Forces Of Attraction Between Particles:
A
- Metallic bonding
- Each metal atom is bonded to all metal atoms around it in a 3D crystal lattice structure
- Free/delocalised valence electrons move throughout the lattice
- There are strong electrostatic attractions between the protons and delocalised electrons
3
Q
Electrical Conductivity:
A
Can conduct electricity due to the mobility of the delocalised electrons
4
Q
Melting/Boiling Point:
A
High melting/boiling points due to the very strong metallic bonding that requires a lot of energy to break those bonds
5
Q
Solubility In Water:
A
Insoluble in water, but some can react with water (eg, Li, Na, Ca, K)
6
Q
Toughness:
A
- Some are hard metals and some are soft/bendable
- Due to the attractive forces having no direction, the layers of atoms can slide over each other without disrupting the bonds
- Metals are malleable and ductile
