General Flashcards
What are the four types of solids?
Ionic
Metallic
Covalent network
Covalent molecular
Why can/can’t solids conduct electricity?
There are delocalised or freely moving electrons/there are no delocalised or freely moving electrons
Which types of solids are soluble?
Ionic and polar covalent molecular solids
Which types of solids are insoluble?
Metallic, covalent network and non-polar covalent molecular solids
What is the bond angle of a bent/v-shape?
120°, unless it’s a tetrahedral arrangement and then it’s 109.5°
What is the bond angle of a linear shape?
180°
What is the bond angle of a trigonal planar shape?
120°
What is the bond angle of a trigonal pyramidal shape?
109.5°
What is the bond angle of a tetrahedral shape?
109.5°
What is the most electronegative atom?
Fluorine
What calculation is required for calculating moles, mass or Molar mass?
n = m/M
If a molecule is polar and the dipoles are unable to cancel out, what does that mean?
There are lone pairs so the molecule is asymmetrical
How do you solve questions that ask which reaction releases more energy and provides bond energies?
- Using the equations given make a bond breaking (reactants) and bond making (products) column
- Using the table, figure out the values for each column
- Use ΔrH = bonds broken - bonds made
- State which reaction releases more energy
