Metallic Bonding & Structure Flashcards
Describe the structure and bonding of metallic compounds
C - giant metallic lattice
B - many strong metallic bonds
D - strong electrostatic force of attraction between cations and delocalised electrons
Explain why metals are described as malleable.
Cations can slide over each other so can change shape while the metallic bond remains in place
Describe and explain the electrical conductivity of metals.
Can conduct in solid or liquid states.
—> delocalised electrons are free to move and carry a charge through the structure
Describe and explain the melting and boiling points of metallic compounds.
High melting and boiling points.
—> lots of energy is required to overcome the strong electrostatic force of attraction between cations and delocalised electrons
Describe and explain the solubility of metals.
Metals do not dissolve!
—> and interactions between metal and polar solvents would instead lead to reactions
