Metallic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Definition
A
Electrostatic force of attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons
2
Q
3 factors affecting strength of bond
A
- Number of protons (nuclear attraction)
- Number of delocalised electrons per atom
- Size of ion
3
Q
Properties
A
High melting point
Good conductor of electricity
4
Q
Test for cations
A
- Add to warm NaOH and it turns moist litmus paper from red to blue as ammonia is formed and ammonium ions are present
5
Q
Test for carbonates
A
Add nitric acid
If fizzing is observed, contains carbonate ions
6
Q
Test for sulfates
A
Add to Ba(NO3)2
If present a white precipitate forms
7
Q
Halide test
A
Add AgNO3 then test with NH3
1. Cl forms white precipitate and dissolves in aq ammonia
2. Br forms cream precipitate and dissolves in concentrated ammonia
3. I forms yellow precipitate and doesn’t dissolve in ammonia
8
Q
Why is halide tests preformed last
A
Carbonate and sulfate both react to Ag so it can give a false positive
