Group 7 Flashcards
Trend in boiling points
Increases down the group, as molecules have more electrons and larger London forces between molecules. More energy needed to break forces.
Electronic configuration
S2 P5
often react to form 1- ions
Displacement of halide ions
More reactive halogen will displace halide from compound. And cyclohexane layer will have the displaced halide in it
Eg cl is colourless, br is orange and iodine is purple
Reactivity down the group
Decreases as atoms gets bigger, increase in shielding, attract and accept electrons less so they readily form 1- ions less easily down the group
Write out Disproportionation with water
Cl2 + H2O —> HCLO + HCL
write out disproptionation with NaOH
Cl2 + 2NaOH —> NaCl + NaClO + H2O
