Metallic bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is a metallic bond?
A
The bond between the positive metal ions and delocalized negative electrons.
2
Q
Why are metals good conductors of electricity and heat?
A
The delocalized electrons carry electrical current and thermal energy through the whole structure
3
Q
Why are most metals malleable?
A
The layers of atoms in a metal can slide over each other
4
Q
What is done to prevent metal layers from sliding over each other?
A
We create alloys (a mixture of 2 or more metals) Alloys are harder than metals, this is beacuse metals have different size atoms to each other so the varying sizes distort the layers.
