Metallic Bonding Flashcards
1} Define metallic bonding?
The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between positive metal ions and sea of delocalised electrons
Describe the structure and bonding in any metals?
For instance, Potassium has a giant metallic structure of positive metal ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons, with strong electrostatic forces of attraction between postive ions and electrons
Why are typical metals malleable?
Because, metals have regular arrangement of layers that is able to slide past each other without breaking the bonds
Why metals has a high melting point?
A large amount of heat is needed to overcome the strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the positive metal ion and the sea of delocalised electrons moving within the lattice.
What are some physical properties of metals?
1} Good conductors of hear
2} High melting point
3} Shiny/Malleable/Sonorous
