Ionic bonds Flashcards
What is an ionic bond?
The bonding between metals and non-metals
What is the meaning of ionic bonding?
The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between positive and negative ions
Meaning of ionic lattice?
Regular arrangement of alternating positive and negative ions
What is the meaning of a lattice?
Regular arrangement of particles
What are the physical properties of ionic compounds?
1} High melting point = A lot of heat is needed to overcome the strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
2} Conducts electricity in molten/aqueous state = The ions are free to move carrying a charge with them
3} Brittle = When hit their layers slides past each other causing oppositely charged ions to meet causing them to repel, which results in them breaking apart
4} Soluble in water = water has a slight electrical charge which is attracted away from the lattice from the ions, breaking the ionic bond which causes the compound to dissolve.
Meaning of ionic compound?
A compound containing electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
