Q

What are the physical properties of ionic compounds?

A

1} High melting point = A lot of heat is needed to overcome the strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
2} Conducts electricity in molten/aqueous state = The ions are free to move carrying a charge with them
3} Brittle = When hit their layers slides past each other causing oppositely charged ions to meet causing them to repel, which results in them breaking apart
4} Soluble in water = water has a slight electrical charge which is attracted away from the lattice from the ions, breaking the ionic bond which causes the compound to dissolve.
