Metallic Bonding Flashcards
What does metallic bonding involve?
Delocalised electrons
What kind of forces are metallic bonds?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction
What are the forces between?
Positive metal ions and shared negative electrons
What is the purpose of the forces?
To hold the atoms together
What produces the properties of metals?
Delocalised electrons
What is the state of a metal at room temperature?
Solid
what kind of forces are they?
Very strong
How can the forces be broken?
Lots of energy
What is the boiling point of metallic bonding?
Very high
What do they conduct?
Electricity and heat.
Why are they malleable?
Layers of atoms can slide over each other.
What is harder pure metals or alloys?
Alloys, when mixed with another metal it distorts the layers which makes it difficult to slide over each other.
