Chemical Bonds Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
- the transfer of electrons
- The attraction between oppositely charged ions, made in compounds of metals and non-metals
What is a covalent bond?
When two atoms share electrons, found in most non-metal elements and non-metal compounds
What is metallic bonding?
The attraction of positively charged ions to negatively charged delocalised electrons, found in metals and alloys
What is an alloy?
Mixture of metals and other substances
When are ions created/
When atoms gain or lose electrons
Why are group 0 elements unreactive?
Because they have a full outer shell
What are cautions and anions?
Cation - a positively charged ion
Anions - negatively charged ion
What is an ionic lattice?
Giant structure that is held together by strong electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ions
