Metallic Bonding Flashcards
what are the properties of metals determined by?
- the types of atoms present
- the type of bonding bwteen the atoms
- the way the atoms atre packed together
what are metals ?
giant structures with a ‘sea’ of free electrons (delocalised electrons)
are metallic bonds strong?
yes
if metallic bonds are strong what does it mean metals have?
. a regular structure
. high melting points
. high boiling points
what is special aboit the outer shell in metallic bonding?
. in metalic bonding the electrons in the outer shell are free to move
what is the strength of a metallic bond caused by?
the force of attraction between the metal ions and free moving electrons
how does a metal become stronger?
with more free electrons and more protons the ions posses the metal becomes stronger
how can a metallic bond conduct heat and electricity?
because of the delocalised electrons (free electrons) can move around causing the metal to be able to conduct heat AND ELECTRICITY
How can a metal become better at conducting heat and electricity?
with more free electrons
Why are metals malleable ?
because the free electrons allow the atoms to slide over eachother meaning they can be molded
why do metallic bonds have high melting and boiling points?
because metallic bonds are strong
why does the melting and boiling point of elements increase as you move from the left to the right of the periodic table ?
beacuse the number of free electrons increases therefore the attraction betwwen the positive ions and the free electrons increases
