Metallic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Bonding
A
The type of bonding that forms between atoms is determined by their valence
Valence is the how ‘full’ the outer electron shell is
The more electrons in an outer shell, the more strongly the electrons are held
The three main types of bonding that occur between atoms are metallic, ionic and covalent
2
Q
Metal valence
A
Metals - low valence
Outer shells relatively empty
Outer electrons weakly held
3
Q
Metallic bonding
A
Metal atoms - densely packed - neat 3D
Outer shell electrons equally attracted any atom they are delocalised - move easily
4
Q
Properties of metals
A
Moderate melting point
Dense
Good thermal conductors
Good electrical conductors
‘Shiny’ lustre
Malleable
Ductile
