Ionic Bonding Flashcards
Ions
Forms when atoms with low electronegativity (relative empty shells) bond with atoms with high electronegativity (relatively full shells) resulting in a transfer of electrons
Atoms lose electrons = positive charge
Atoms gain charge = negative charge
Ionic bonding
Positive ions very strongly attracted to negative ions, but are repelled by each other
Results in a solid crystalline lattice of alternating positive and negative ions - strongly held in place but with moderately large spaces between them
Ionic compounds
High melting and boiling points
Relatively low density
Hard but brittle
Poor thermal conductors
Electrical insulators in solid states
Good electrical conductors in molten or aqueous states
