Metallic Bonding Flashcards
Where does metallic bonding occur?
between metal atoms
What do all metals consist of?
a lattice of positive ions existing in a sea of delocalised negative electrons
Where does electrostatic attraction occur in metallic bonding?
between positive metal ions and negatively charged sea of delocalised electrons
What is the number of delocalised electrons dependent on?
how many electrons are lost by each metal atom
What does metallic bonding form?
giant structures
What are the properties of structures that are metallically bonded?
- good conductors of heat and electricity - sea of electrons carry charge, energy spread by increasingly vigorous vibrations of closely packed ions
- strong
- ductile and malleable - rows are arranged so that they can slide over one another
- high melting/boiling point - giant structure
What is the strength of a metallic bond dependent on?
-charge of ion - greater charge, more delocalised electrons, stronger electrostatic attraction
-size of ion - small, electrons close to nucleus, stronger electrostatic attraction
