Metallic Bonding Flashcards
Describe metallic bonding in terms of electrostatic attraction
Metals have a structure of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons. The metallic bond is the electrostatic force of attraction between the delocalised electrons and the positive ions
Explain why metals are good conductors of electricity
The delocalised electrons are free to move and carry charge throughout the metal, meaning metals are good conductors of electricity (and heat). The movement of electrons means energy can be transferred quickly through the material.
Explain why metals are malleable
The layers of metal ions can slide over each other, making metals malleable. This means they can be hammered or rolled into flat sheets.
