Ionic Bonding Flashcards
How are ions formed?
By losing or gaining electrons
What is the charge of radicals?
Ammonium: NH4 +
Carbonate: CO3 2-
Nitrate: NO3 -
Sulfate: SO4 2-
What is a giant ionic lattice?
The ions are held together in a closely packed 3D lattice arrangement by the strong electrostatic forces of attract between oppositely charged ions.
What are the properties of ionic compounds?
Very strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions so a lot of energy is needed to overcome this, hence high melting and boiling points.
They are not electrical conductors when solid, because they have no delocalised electrons to carry charge. But when melted or dissolved in water, they are able to conduct electricity.
