E.g. Don’t / Can’t
Collocation
words which ‘go together’ e.g. Merry Christmas
Neologism
a newly formed word e.g. influencer, cheugy
Blends
words that are formed by joining more than one lexeme where more than one or both have been shortened that results in something that incorporates the meaning of both e.g. chillax, infomercial
Shortenings
part(s) of words are omitted, usually form the end of a lexeme e.g. prob(lem)
Backformation
where new words are formed by ‘substituting’ an affix that is thought to be a part of an older word e.g. burglar -> burgle
versus -> verse
Beggar -> beg
Commonisation
when a brand name comes to be used as a general term e.g. google
Borrowing
a word is borrowed into English from another language (it can be altered in the process) e.g. ramen, yoghurt
Initialisms
words formed from the initials of other words where you say each letter e.g. OMG
Acronyms
words formed from the initials of other words that you pronounce as a single word e.g. SCUBA, GOAT
Compounding
two or more morphemes that are combined in their entirety to make a word e.g. holiday, breakfast, download
Affixation
similar to compounding but where bound morphemes are used e.g. i-pad, e-books
