Metal Structure And Properties Flashcards
Why do metals have high boiling points?
Because the have strong electrostatic forces?
What do strong electrostatic forces hold together?
Delocalised electrons and positive ions
Why do metals conduct electricity?
Because the atoms are very close together and there are delocalised electrons that can move from atom to atom
What are superconductors?
Materials that conduct electricity with little or no resistance
When do materials become superconductors?
Very low temperatures
What are the benefits of superconductors?
They can transmit power with very little loss of energy
Can make super fast electronic circuits
Very powerful electromagnets
What are the drawbacks of superconductors?
Only work at very low temperatures which are costly to maintain - need to develop ones which work at 20 degrees
What is metallic bonding?
The strong attraction between close packed positive ions and delocalised electrons
