Metal Reactions Observations Flashcards
lithium + water
floats, effervescence, metal disappears, red flame - stored in oil to prevent reaction with oxygen and water vapour, alkaline, purple UI
Sodium + water
floats, effervescence, melts into a ball, metal disappears, exothermic, yellow flame - stored in oil to prevent reaction with oxygen and water vapour, alkaline, purple UI
potassium + water
self-ignites into a lilac flame, floats, melts into a ball, effervescence, metal disappears, exothermic - stored in oil to prevent reaction with oxygen and water vapour, alkaline, purple UI - hydrogen gas produced is ignited by extreme exothermic reaction
calcium + water
effervescence, metal sinks and rises up repeatedly - alkaline, blue UI
magnesium + water
slow effervescence, metals sinks - alkaline, blue UI
barium + water
effervescence, metal sinks - alkaline, blue UI
magnesium + steam
bright white flame, white solid formed
zinc + steam
yellow solid formed which turned white when cooled, glows red hot
iron + steam
solid glows red, forms black solid
magnesium + acid
rapid effervescence, metal disappears, colourless solution forms, exothermic
zinc + acid
steady effervescence
iron + acid
slow effervescence
lead + acid
few bubbles produced very slowly
copper + acid
no reaction
aluminium + acid
no initial reaction, after 20 mins effervescence is observed - Al is covered in an impervious layer of aluminium oxide which is basic and will react with acids
