What is investment casting?
A she’ll mould is built around a wax pattern that can be melted away leaving a cavity which is then filled with molten metal
Press forming?
Used to shape sheet metal into 3D forms
What is spinning?
Circular sheet metal components which are symmetrical can be produced by forcing a metal blank onto a rotating former
What is cupping
A spherical drawing punch is pressed into a clamped metal sheet until a crack appears
What is deep drawing
A metalworking process which uses tensile forces to stretch metal
What is forging
A manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localised compressive forces
What is drop forging
A process where a hammer is raised and then “dropped” onto the workpiece to deform it according to the shape of the die
What is rolling?
The stock metal is passed through sets of rollers to reduce the thickness of the material
What is bending
Metal can be bent cold or hot and sheet metal can be folded in a similar way to thermoplastics although it requires specialised high pressure machinery
What is sand casting
Involves pouring molten metal into a prepared cavity in a sand mould and allowing it to solidify
What is investment casting?
A she’ll mould is built around a wax pattern that can be melted away leaving a cavity which is then filled with molten metal
What is die casting?
Forcing molten metal under high pressure into cavities of steel moulds
What is low temperature casting?
Metals such as pewter can be cast into jewellery and other items using moulds made from MDF
What is MIG welding
An arc welding process in which a continuous solid wire electrode is fed through a welding gun and into a weld pool, joining the two base materials together
What is TIG welding
A precise and high quality form of electric arc welding that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode
What is spot welding?
A resistance welding process which apples pressure and heat from an electric current to the weld area
What is Oxy-acetylene welding
A welding process that uses gas to weld two sheets of metals together
What is soldering
A joining process used to join different types of metals together by melting solder
