Metal Joining Flashcards
What is MIG Welding
Metal Inert Gas
Heat is generated by an arc in a small area
What material is MIG Welding used for
Used to weld aluminium or medium carbon steels
What products would use MIG welding
Bike frames, climbing frames, vehicle exhausts
What is TIG Welding
Tungsten Inert Gas
Electric arc welding where the electrode doesn’t melt so a filler rod is used
What is TIG Welding used for
stainless steel and non ferrous metals
What are the advantages of TIG welding
Allows for greater control
Stronger welds can be made
What are the disadvantages of TIG welding
Requires high skill
Slow process
What products would use TIG welding
Stainless steel ladders for boats or pools
Car exhausts
What is Oxy-acetylene welding
Uses a mixture of high pressure oxygen and acetylene to form an intense flame
Used to weld low carbon steel sheet, tube or plate
What is Oxy-acetylene welding used for
Quick repair jobs
Useful in remote locations where there is no electrical supply
What is brazing
Uses a lower temperature than welding and is suitable for joining thinner gauge metals
What does brazing use
A filler rod made from brass which melts at 850c
What is soldering
similar to brazing but only used for light weight applications and thin gauge metals
What does soldering use
Filler metal typically of a lowering melting point
Typically alloy of tin and copper
What is soldering used for
Jewellery and attaching components to circuit boards
What is riveting
Permanent joining method usually used to join sheet metal or plate
Uses rivets which are metal fasteners which have a head at one end and a shaft or tail at the other
How does riveting work
The rivet is dropped into a pre drilled hole
A set tool is put over the head and the shaft end is hammered to squeeze the two metal together
What is pop riveting
More modern form of riveting used to join thin sheet metal
What is the pop riveting process
Rivet used has a rivet and pin and the head is pushed through a hole
Riveting pliers pull out the pin which causes the head to squash down which pulls the two metal together
