Metacognition Flashcards
Define Metacognition
Thinking about (your own) thinking - Flavel (1979)
Lawson’s (1984) 2 dimensions of metacognition
- Knowledge = what we know about our cognition
- Regulation = how we control our cognition
Define declarative, procedural and conditional knowledge
Knowledge about one’s self as a learner, knowledge about how to perform a procedure and knowledge of when and why to use strategies
Define planning, monitoring and evaluating (in terms of regulation of cognition)
Select strategies and goal-setting, keeping track of understanding, performance and self-testing, assessing final result of one’s learning e.g. test score
Cognitive vs metacognitive strategies
Cognitive strategies = mind maps, rehearsal, cover and check, past papers
Metacognitive strategies = looking at feedback/ performance on past papers to work out which answers you got wrong and why, reflection
Schraw and Dennison
Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) true or false questionnaire
