Metabolism Reactions Flashcards
Describe the reaction of the conversion of glucose to starch and glycerol to cellulose
- glucose is joined together to make glycogen in animals and starch/cellulose in plants
What is the purpose and the tissues and organs involved in the conversion of glucose to starch and glycerol to cellulose?
- glycogen and starch are insoluble and therefore good storage molecules
- muscular and liver tissues in animals and leaf and roots in plants
Describe the process in making lipids
- 3 fatty acids and glycerol and joined to make new lipids
What is the purpose of making lipids?
- to make fats for storage
Describe the process in making proteins
Amino acids are joined together to make new proteins
What is the purpose in making proteins and what are the tissue/organs involved?
- Growth or Repair
- muscles/ white blood cells
Describe the process of respiration
Glucose is OXIDISED to carbon dioxide and water
What is the purpose of respiration?
Release energy so all the other enzyme controlled reactions can take place
Describe the process in the breakdown of excess amino acids (proteins)
Excess amino acids are broken down into urea
What is the purpose and tissues and organs involved in the break down of excess amino acids?
- liver breaks down the amino acids, the kidneys to remove the urea
