Metabolism I Flashcards
What’s ATP?
Energy currency of the cell.
Used to perform 3 types of cellular work:
1. Chemical work
2. Transport work
3. Mechanical work
What causes the energy release when a phosphate group is released from ATP?
Due to the repulsion between negative charges the phosphate groups carry, energy is released when the bond is cleaved off
How is ATP produced?
Using energy that arises from catabolic reactions in the cell
What’s a catabolic reaction?
Reactions which release energy
What are anabolic reactions?
Reactions that require energy
When reaction reaches equilibrium, what happens to the delta G value
Reaches 0.
When the delta G value is 0, it means the cell is dead
Do catabolic reactions happen in one step or via a series of small steps,
Series of small steps
What’s allosteric regulation?
Function of one site of an enzyme is affected by the binding of a regulatory molecule at a different site
What are 2 types of regulatory molecules?
Inhibitor + Activator
What does an activator do to the shape of an enzyme?
Makes it better (make catalysis easier)
What does an inhibitor do to the shape of an enzyme?
Makes it worse
Do allosteric enzymes have more than one subunit?
Yes, each subunit has its own active site that may be active or inactive
Does the change in shape of one subunit affect the other subunits?
Yes.
Sort of like in a ‘follow the leader’ format
