Metabolism And Survival Flashcards
What is cell metabolism?
The term used for the thousands of biochemical reactions that occur within a living cell.
What are metabolic pathways?
Controlled and integrated pathways of enzyme-catalysed reactions within a cell.
What are the two types of reactions that occur in cells?
Anabolic and catabolic.
Describe anabolic reactions.
Reactions that build up large molecules from small molecules and require energy.
Describe catabolic reactions.
Reactions that break down large molecules into smaller molecules and release energy.
what makes up the cell metabolism?
all of the chemical reactions that take place in a cell.
what is the basis of the membrane?
the phospholipid.
explain the head and tail of the phospholipid.
the head contains the phosphate and is hydrophilic. the tails contain the lipid (fat) and is hydrophobic.
why is the Fluid Mosaic Model referred to as fluid and mosaic?
fluid because the lipid bilayer can move and proteins can move latterly
mosaic because the proteins can be arranged in any order like a mosaic
