Metabolism and Adverse Conditions Flashcards
Describe how environments vary on a particular organism
Many environments vary beyond the tolerable limits for normal metabolic activity for a particular organism
How do animals react to adverse conditions?
Adapt or avoid for survival
Describe dormancy
Part of some organisms’ lifecycle to allow survival during a period when the costs of continued metabolic activity would be too high
Describe what happens during dormancy
There is a decrease in metabolic rate, heart rate, breathing rate and body temperature
What can dormancy be?
Predictive or consequential
Explain predictive dormancy
It occurs before the onset of adverse conditions
Explain consequential dormancy
It occurs after the onset of adverse conditions
How can some mammals survive winter/low temperatures?
Hibernation
Explain aestivation
Allows survival in periods of high temperature and drought
Describe Torpor
A period of reduced activity in some organisms with high metabolic rates
How does migration avoid adversity?
By expending energy to relocate to a more suitable environment
What can migratory behaviour be?
Innate or learned
Describe specialised techniques in studies of long distance migration
Satellite tracking
Leg rings
Describe leg rings
Animals have to be captured then recaptured
Only shows start and end locations
Cheap
Describe satellite tracking
Expensive
Can see whole migratory cycle
Doesn’t need recaptured
