metabolism Flashcards
what is and does respiration do?
it’s a chemical reaction that releases energy from glucose
what is the energy released by respiration used by and used for?
by enzymes to synthesise new molecules in the cell
what is metabolism?
the sum of all the chemical reactions in a cell or the body
the sum of all chemical reactions in a cell or the body is called?
metabolism
glucose is the starting point for many new chemicals.
what is glucose converted to in plant cells?
- cellulose. (strengthens the plant cell wall)
- starch. (storage form of glucose)
- reacts with nitrate ions to create AMINO ACIDS (used to synthesise proteins)
in humans and other animals, what is glucose converted to?
glycogen (storage form of glucose)
how are lipid molecules formed ?
1 glycerol molecule + 3 fatty acid molecules —> lipid
we find lipid in the cell membrane
where do we find lipid?
in the cell membrane
what does the final reaction of metabolism involve?
protein
what happens to excess proteins
they are broken down into the chemical urea
the urea is then excreted by the kidneys.
