excersise Flashcards
what do we need energy for as humans?
movement
keep warm
chemical reactions to build larger molecules
what is all the energy we need provided by?
respiration
when resting our bodies do not need a great deal of energy because we are not moving
however, when we exercise, the body has to react to the increased demand for energy,
how do we get the more energy we need?
through increased aerobic respiration
increased aerobic respiration means that the body requires what?
how do we provide this?
more oxygen
both breathing rate and breathing volume increases (we breath more frequently with deeper breaths)
this gets more oxygen into the bloodstream
how can we get more oxygen into the bloodstream when exercising?
we breathe more frequently with deeper breaths
the heart rate increases to pump more oxygenated blood around the body
what’s one problem when exercising ?
what happens at this point?
sometimes not enough oxygen can be supplied to the muscles especially if we are exercising hard
anaerobic respiration takes place
what happens during anaerobic respiration?
the oxidation of glucose is incomplete which leads to a build up of the chemical lactic acid
what does the oxidation of glucose being incomplete lead to ?
the build up of the chemical lactic acid
what happens to the muscles during long periods of vigorous activity?
what does this lead to?
the muscles become fatigue because of the lactic acid build up
which causes the muscles to stop contracting efficiently
when muscles stop contracting due to the build up of lactic acid, what needs happening ?
what does this create?
your body has to remove the lactic acid from the muscles. This creates a condition called the oxygen debt
