Metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
What is metabolism?
A
The sum of all chemical reactions in a cell or in the body.
2
Q
What is this reaction controlled by?
A
Enzymes and many need a transfer of energy.
3
Q
What is the energy transferred by?
A
Respiration to make new molecules.
4
Q
What is used for in plants?
A
- Glucose is converted into cellulose which strengthens the plant cell.
- Glucose is converted into starch as storage.
- Glucose is reacted with nitrate ions to make amino acids which are used to synthesise proteins.
5
Q
What is it used for in humans?
A
Glucose is converted into the molecule glycogen which is a storage form of glucose.
6
Q
What are lipids made out of?
A
1 glycerol+3 fatty acids
7
Q
What other new molecules does it make?
A
The breakdown of excess proteins into urea for excretion.
