Metabolism 2: ATP Flashcards
What is ATP?
Adenosine triphosphate
What bond joins the phosphate groups to each other in ATP?
Phosphoanhydride bonds
What bond joins the first phosphate group to adenosine in ATP?
A phosphoester bond
What is AMP?
Adenosine monophosphate
What is ADP?
Adenosine diphosphate
What naming system is used to describe each phosphate in ATP?
Alpha, beta, and gamma
Alpha is the closest to adenosine
What is resonance stabilisation in ATP?
The charge density is distributed within phosphate groups rather than localised to one oxygen atom
The charge is therefore highly delocalised
What is electrostatic repulsion in ATP?
Negative charges all throughout the molecule
Repels other molecules of ATP
Prevents reactions between two molecules of ATP
Helps to stabilise molecules
Less likely to form dimers
What effect does metal binding have on ATP?
Mg2+, for example, will co-ordinate with negative charges on the oxygen atoms
Confers stability
