Q

Why is benzene carcinogenic?

A

It is planar due to presence of double bonds
When it comes into contact with skin it can pass through the cell
Doesn’t dissolve in water so can move about the cell - could pass into DNA and disrupt DNA structure, causing mutations

6
Q

Why are aromatic compounds more stable than alkenes and alkynes?

A

Because of the delocalisation of the electrons in p-orbitals across the entire compound
