Metabolism Flashcards
Digestion and absorption process?
Digestion of foods from large chunks, to large molecules, to small molecules. Then gets absorbed in blood circulation.
Why do we need to eat?
- For body structure and growth, through absorption.
- Energy, measured in ATP, maintains body heat and body alive.
What are essential nutrients?
- Nutrient we cannot make in body, and is vital to have.
- Such as amino acids 9/10, fatty acids omega 3 (fish) and 6 (eggs), vitamins and minerals.
What has an important role of anabolism and catabolism?
The liver.
What are the different types of macronutrients?
Proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and water.
What are the different types of micronutrients?
Vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and pre/probiotics.
What is glycogenesis?
The break down of glycogen into glucose.
What is glyconeogenisis?
The formation of glucose from glycerol or amino acids.
What is basil metabolic rate?
Energy utilized to maintain vital organs functioning.
What is total metabolic rate?
All energy required during the day, including BMR. Varies with stress, physical activity, genetics, muscle mass, outside temp.
What are the factors that effect metabolism?
Age, gender, body temperature.
