Metabolic Pathways Flashcards
A reaction which releases energy and breaks down molecules
Catabolic
A reaction which requires energy and builds up molecules
Anabolic
What is a metabolism
The term used to describe the enormous number of integrated and complex biochemical reactions that occur in an organism
Induced fit
Enzyme molecule and the active site change slightly making the active site for very closely round the substrate
Competitive inhibitors
Inhibitor joins the active site on the enzyme prevents binding of the substrate
Non competitive inhibitors
Bonds to the enzyme away from the active site altering the shape of the enzyme to that even if the substrate can bind the active site functions less effectively. The inhibitor is reversible
Plasma membrane
Made of protein and phospholipid molecules
Transition state
State corresponding to the highest energy along the reaction
Activation energy
Energy that is required to initially break the bonds in the reactants
Alternative pathway
Steps can be bypassed
Metabolic pathway
A sequence of reactions that is controlled by enzymes that change one metabolite to another
Problems that can occur in metabolic pathways
The reaction is unable to occur and intermediate metabolite builds up in the system
