Metabolic Pathways Flashcards
What are metabolic pathways?
They are integrated and controlled pathways of enzyme catalysed reactions in a cell.
What are two reactions within the metabolic pathways?
- Anabolic reaction
- Catabolic reaction
What happens in an anabolic reaction?
Involves the building up of large molecules from small molecules and requires energy
What happens in a catabolic reaction?
Involves the break down of large molecules into small molecules and releases energy.
What are the routes that a metabolic pathway can have?
Reversible, irreversible and alternative
what are the functions of a protein in the membrane?
- pores - allows molecules to pass through
- pumps - allows molecules to pass through and requires energy
- Enzymes - catalysing chemical reactions
What controls the metabolic pathways?
They are controlled by the presence or absence of key enzymes.
What factors regulate the rate of the metabolic pathways?
- temperature
- ph
- substrate concentration
- inhibition
Describe induced fit:
Induced fit is when a substrate binds to the active site and the active site changes shape to allow it to better fit.
