Metabolic Disorders and Treatment Strategies Flashcards
Barbiturates
CNS depressants (avoid with acute intermittent poryphoria)
Acute Intermittent Poryphoria
Rare, AD disease where you don’t have heme (avoid barbiturates)
Galactosemia
can’t process galactose - simply avoid
Phenylketonuria
lacking PAH (98%) or PAH co-factor, avoid PA (take NT balancers if missing co-factor).
congenital hypothyroidism
replace with thyroid hormone
biotinidase deficiency
replace with biotin
Urea cycle deficiency
lacking an enzyme to convert nitrogen to urea, can become hyperammonemia
Sodium benzoate
an alternative pathway for nitrogen excretion
Oral resins
Diversion for heterozygous hypercholesteremia
What can be a diverter for hypercholesteremia?
oral resins
Statins
Inhibit HcGMA in liver, which produces cholesterol. Inhibition treatment for heterozygous hypercholesteremia.
LDL apheresis
blood passed out from donor to machine which eliminates cholesterol - for SEVERE (homozygous) hypercholesteremia
