what is an analytical statement?
statements that are true in themselves- true by definition
what are synthetic statements?
they can be verified by our 5 senses
what are moral statements?
expressions of preference, attitude or feeling
they cannot be verified or falsified and are therefore meaningless
why is emotivism ethical non naturalism?
because it rejects the view that moral tell you anything about the external world
what does good, bad, right and wrong express?
approval/ disapproval
what can emotivism be known as ?
the ‘boo’ ‘hurrah’ theory
why is it called the boo hurrah theory?
moral statements come from our emotional responses to situtaions
give an example of boo hurrah
- murder is wrong (murder- boooooo)
- giving to charity is good (charity- hurrahhh)
when making moral statements ayer said we are doing two things?
1- expressing our emotions to a subject
2- encourage others to feel the same
